Hey, guys! I’m that fiddle player! I’ve gone back to these kids several times and it’s such a treat to play for them! The country is Malawi! I’m a fiddler/singer in Nashville. Find me on Instagram @paigevictoriapark Here is a picture to prove that it’s me! https://imgur.com/a/gpsBA
I can never get over how genuinely happy kids are in these countries. Like, these kids have DIRT for toys and theyre just as happy and content as can be.
As someone who spent many years in Africa, I find it extremely unlikely this is the first time they’ve heard a fiddle. Everyone has access to a radio, everyone has grown up to many kinds of music. They often play western music of all types. They may seem poor and so on, but they probably have local public schools they attend and have heard music like this.
What is unique to them is likely having someone play a string instrument like this in person, particularly a white person which some kids might not have seen in person, or at least seen this close and is interacting with them.
I find all of the “Africans see or hear [THIS] for the first time” to largely perpetuate the false stereotype that they are all living in tiny huts in far away villages, unexposed to the world. This just is not the case for 95% of the continent anymore.
They are poor, their access to such things is minimal, and they may not have similar luxuries, but it doesn’t mean they’re all Bush men.
A better title would be “African children hear and dance with a fiddle player IN PERSON for the first time.”
African kids first time X, and im watching 🙂 such fun videos
Ahh the simple things in life
This is great, they really know how to enjoy themselves
That’s really sweet. I doubt anyone can come away from this without a massive smile.
Now play “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”
that little dude, bottom left in blue shirt has some moves!
Man does that put a smile on my face. Pure innocent happiness.
I love how music transcends language barriers, race etc. it unifies us like nothing else does.
LOCK THE THREAD
Music. Makes the people. Come together. Yeah!
Music is definitely the universal language. This is awesome.

This is awesome. However, I did get distracted by the guy in back. I was trying to figure out if that was an Oklahoma State Cowboys shirt or not.
Well that was just wonderful to watch.
Genuinely made me smile
I love how she’s teasing them and they are just dying to start dancing!
This warmed my heart :,)
“What did you do in Africa?”
“I fiddled with some kids”
“Why don’t you take a seat over there”
No matter where youre from, a fiddle will make you want to break out in a jig lol
In 12 years time there are going to be some confused Irish when the new generation of fiddlers hit the web.
“So I played the fiddle for some kids in Africa.”
“Where in Africa?”
“Doesn’t matter. Just Africa.”
What a hootnany
And I’m the monster saying “Quiet down! I can’t hear the fiddle.”
I’ve never seen a group of people that want to just dance so badly!!
Where in Africa?
Those kids got real wiggly
The kid with the blanket rules.
Just showed this to my ex-wife and she didn’t even crack a smile…yup, divorce was the right choice.
Children laughing is the best sound in the world

Why do they call that a fiddle?
Isn’t that just a violin?
Is there a subreddit devoted to people hearing/seeing/experiencing things for the first time?
