Environmental Innovator (Large Business)
As a registered 5-Star EnviroStars business, Watson manufactures adjustable furniture using a high percentage of recycled and regionally sourced materials. Their products are designed to facilitate re-use and with end-of-life recyclability in mind. They recently spent $1 million for equipment to fully move away from use of PVC to environmentally preferable polypropylene edge banding. A number of electrical upgrades cut lighting costs by 49 percent. Sawdust once made up 80 percent of the company’s waste. To solve that problem, the company recently bought a wood waste briquetter that converts 182 tons of sawdust per year into fuel used at a nearby paper mill in Port Townsend. While designing cutting-edge furniture, Watson is also designing a greener way to do business.
